Nearly a year has passed since my wedding day and I have wondered at how my world has changed so much. I look back through his diary and I see all that I have had to bear, all that we in Ireland have suffered. The government has brought some relief, offering jobs to the poor. And there is some food, corn that they have brought from America. But it is hard to tolerate and does not satisfy as potatoes do. We all pray that the new crop will bring an end to this terrible time and we may all fill our bellies again. I send my love to Michael as the wind blows west. I hope that his letter arrives before the baby is born and that my child and I will soon call America our home.
